La aventura del tocador de señoras

He de confesar que escogí este libro muy de prisa entre la biblioteca de mi hermano. Justo estaba a punto de partir a la ciudad donde me operarían, y como ya sabía que me esperaba una larga convalecencia, tomé varios cuyo título me llamó la atención entre los que estaban más a la mano. ¡Y ahora he de decir que qué sensacional elección!

Para empezar, me pareció muy simpático el título. Podría significar mucho para la mente de un mexicano. Y sin más (sin leer siquiera la contraportada, como suelo hacer casi siempre con las películas, simplemente me dejo llevar por el título, el director y los actores) me sumergí en la historia de un hombre sin nombre recién salido de un manicomio, más exactamente en la Barcelona post-olímpica que no le ofrecía gran cosa a este personaje: maduro, sin dinero, con una hermana descrita como una mujer más bien horrible, casada con un hombre al que le vino bien una esposa por presiones de su madre (hacia poco más de un año colocó un anuncio en la calle que decía que un hombre buscaba una mujer sin importarle la figura, el cerebro ni el dinero) llamado Viriato, que tenía una peluquería llamada "El tocador de señoras". Este se convirtió en el primer trabajo honrado de la vida del protagonista y a partir de ahí, se sucede una serie de hechos disparatados.

Es una trama donde este hombre se ve envuelto de forma casi naive en un misterio policiaco repleto de personalidades excéntricas, todas ellas con un actuar misterioso y ciertamente torcido, donde está claro el gusto del escritor por crear esta historia haciéndola francamente divertida y a su vez, crítica a la telaraña social de la época.

Después de investigar un poco más, me entero que este libro es la secuencia de Eduardo Mendoza a "El misterio de la cripta embrujada" y "El laberinto de las aceitunas", donde aparece el mismo protagonista anti-héroe, libros que aún no he leído y que lo haré próximamente.

Es pues, un libro que resulta sorprendentemente divertido al mismo tiempo que reflexivo, al hacer pensar al lector en las dificultades de rehacer una vida, de reintegrarse a la sociedad y de la estrechez de la vida humana. Con un final que...mejor no lo cuento para que lean el libro.

Muy recomendable.

I must confess that I chose this book very quickly from my brother's library. I was just about to leave to the city where I was going to have surgery, and as I knew I was going to be on a long convalescence, I brought with me several whose title caught my attention. And now I must say that what sensational choice!

To start, I found the title very nice. It could mean a lot to a mexican's mind. And more (without even reading the back, as I do almost always with movies, I just choose it by the title, director and actors), I immersed myself in the story of a nameless man recently released from an asylum, more exactly in the post-Olympic Barcelona that didn't offer much to this character: mature, penniless, with a sister described as rather a horrible woman, married to a man pressed by his mother to find a wife (around a year ago he placed an ad on the street that said there was a man seeking a woman no matter the figure, the brains or the money) called Viriato, who had a salon called "The ladies room." This became the first honest work of the protagonist's life and from there, it happens a number of disparate facts.

It is a story where this man is involved in an almost naive way into a detective mystery filled with eccentric personalities, each one with a mysterious and certainly twisted act, where it is clear the writer's taste for creating this history making downright fun and in turn, criticism of the social web of the time.

After a little more research, I found that this book is the sequence to "The Mystery of the Haunted Crypt" and "The Labyrinth of the Olives", showing the same anti-hero protagonist, books I have not read and I will soon.

It is therefore a book that is surprisingly fun while reflective, to make the reader think the difficulties of rebuilding a life, to rejoin society and the narrowness of human life. With an end... I won't tell, you best read the book.
