Bill Cunningham, the documentary

Después de una larga y ansiosa espera, por fin tengo en mis manos el documental Bill Cunningham New York, el primero de los primeros fotógrafos urbanos, del cual ya les había hablado pero no había tenido la oportunidad de ver.

Pues bien, no quedé defraudada sino sumamente fascinada, sorprendida y conmovida. Es una película que muestra a uno de los hombres más misteriosos, conocidos e influyentes de Nueva York, que ha dedicado (casi religiosamente) su vida a capturar fotográficamente a todas esas personas que se ganan su atención por la forma en que visten y después, las publica en su columna del New York Times "On the street".

Como dice él, "el mejor espectáculo de moda está en la calle". Y así, su archivo fotográfico es todo un recuento de la manifestación de la cultura neoyorquina.

Con su inseparable bicicleta (cuenta que le han robado 28 de ellas), que le permite moverse rápidamente de una fiesta en el punto sureste hasta otra en el noreste de la ciudad, mantiene su filosofía de trabajo (afirma que no se puede informar al público si no se ha visto todo) la cual resume en 3 puntos:

1. Tienes que fotografiar las colecciones en la pasarela.
2. Tienes que fotografiar a la gente en la calle, que es quien ha comprado la ropa y quien la usa.
3. Tienes que ir a los eventos (de la alta sociedad) de noche.

Al contrario de lo que se pudiera pensar, al seleccionar los eventos no se guía por las personalidades que asistirán, sino por la fundación o acto benéfico que hará el mayor bien. ¡Incluso pide que no se le mande la lista de invitados! Resalta este hecho en una ciudad donde se ha dicho "Saliste anoche. Nadie ha escrito sobre ti. ¿Existes?".

Y él ha logrado trascender. Vestido con su característico y simple rompevientos azul rey, recibió la condecoración de "Oficial en la Orden de las Artes y las Letras" en Francia, acto que aparece en la película y que logra motivar hasta las lágrimas, donde agradece de igual forma cerrando con la frase "Aquél que busca la belleza la encontrará."

El documental está repleto de frases encantadoras e interesantes que reflejan la forma en que él ha visto la vida:

• "La moda es la mejor armadura para sobrevivir a la realidad de la vida cotidiana."
• "El dinero es la cosa más barata. La libertad es la más cara."
• "Si no aceptas dinero, no te pueden decir qué hacer."
• "Mantén una distancia de lo que haces, así puedes ser más objetivo."
• "La religión es una buena guía en la vida."

Amigo de conocidísimos y anónimos, ahora con sus 83 años, ha sido todo un icono de la ciudad que nunca duerme.


El video viene acompañado de un folleto a manera de hojas de periódico, donde el director habla de las dificultades y las circunstancias en general al momento de filmar.

Absolutamente recomendable.

After a long and anxious waiting, finally I have on my hands the documentary Bill Cunningham New York, the first of the first urban photographers, which I already had talked  to you about but I hadn't had a chance to see.

Well, I was not disappointed but extremely fascinated, surprised and moved. It's a film that shows one of the most mysterious, known and influential persons in New York, who has devoted (almost religiously) his life to capture photographically all those people who catch his attention for the way they dress and then publishes them in his New York Times "On the street" column.

As he says, "the best fashion show is on the street." And so, his photo file is all an account of the manifestation of culture in New York.

With his trusty bike (that have been stolen 28 of them), which lets him move quickly from one southeast party to another in the northeast of the city, maintains his work philosophy (says you can't report to the public unless you've seen it all), which summarizes in 3 points:

1. You have to photograph the collections on the catwalk.
2. You have to photograph the people on the street, who have bought the things and how they're wearing them.
3. And then, you have to go to the evening events.

Contrary to what one might think, in selecting the events he is not driven by the personalities who attended, but by the foundation or charity that will do the most good. Even he asks not to send the guest list!  Highlight this fact in a city that says "You went out last night. Nobody wrote about it. Do you exist?".

And he has managed to transcend. Dressed in his trademark blue windbreaker received the decoration of "Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters" in France, an act which appears in the film and manages to motivate to tears, where he closed equally grateful with the phrase "He who seeks beauty will find it."

The documentary is full of charming and interesting phrases that reflect the way he has seen life:

• "Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life."
• "Money is the cheapest thing. Liberty and freedom is the most expensive."
• "If you don't accept money, they can't tell you what to do."
• "Keep a distance of what you're doing, so you can be more objective."
• "Religion is a good guidance in life."

Friend of celebrities and anonymous, now in his 83 years he is an icon of the city that never sleeps.

The video comes with a booklet like newspaper sheets, where the director talks about the difficulties and circumstances in general at the time of filming.

Absolutely recommended.
