Laon

Hoy quiero hablarles de un viaje que hice a Laon, localidad de la Picardía, en Francia. ¿No les suena? A mí tampoco me sonaba al principio. Lo conocí gracias a que un amigo francés se casó ahí y naturalmente aproveché para dar un recorrido por la zona.

Les cuento cómo fue el viaje. Llegamos ahí en coche desde París (122km aproximadamente). Es una zona muy verde, con paisajes primorosos y carreteras sencillas, por lo que el trayecto resulta agradable. La boda fue en septiembre, así que durante el día hacía una temperatura deliciosa pero en la noche refrescaba mucho.

Pues bien, lo que más llama la atención de este lugar es su catedral, de estilo gótico primitivo, que fue influencia para otras catedrales importantes europeas (se dice que incluso para la de Notre-Dame de Paris). Es un edificio con cinco torres terminadas donde lo más provocativo son los bueyes de tamaño natural que hay en lo más alto de ellas, esto como un agradecimiento al animal. Según cuenta la leyenda, un cansado buey subió a la "acrópolis" de Laon cargado del material de construcción y cuando no podía más, apareció milagrosamente otro buey para sustituirlo en la labor. Nunca había visto algo similar.

El portal principal (oeste) es hermoso. Tiene una ventana en forma de rosa que data de 1210 y tiene una pureza en su estilo gótico similar a la de París. El tallado de las figuras es exquisito, donde aparecen distintas escenas bíblicas y profetas.

El interior resalta por su luminosidad, gracias al material por el que está formado.

Una vez que salimos de ahí, era necesario un café en la plaza situada justo enfrente, donde se podía observar cómodamente esa fachada tan imponente.

Sorpresa fue encontrar ese coche amarillo con la palabra "MEXICO" delante de la catedral. Ahí, solito, sin dueño, parecía que me esperaba para tomarle una foto (lo cual hice, por supuesto).

Un paseo más por la antigua ciudad, compritas de los obligados souvenirs, la foto del recuerdo y listos para regresar a París.

Today I want to talk about a trip I took to Laon, a town of Picardy, France. Doesn't sound familiar to you? At first, It didn't to me, neither. I knew about this place thanks to a French friend who got married there and naturally I had the chance to take a tour of the area.


I tell you how the trip went. We got there by car from Paris (122km approx). It is a very green zone, with gorgeous scenery and easy road, so the ride is pleasant. The wedding was in September, so daytime temperature was delicious but very refreshing at night.


Well, what is striking about it is its cathedral, gothic style, which was influential to other major European cathedrals (it is said that even for the Notre-Dame de Paris). It is a building with five finished towers where the most provocative detail is the natural size oxen in the top of them, as a thank you to the animal. According to legend, a tired oxen got into the "acropolis" of Laon loaded with building material and when he couldn't any more, another oxen miraculously appeared to replace him in the work. I've never seen anything like this before.


The main portal (west) is beautiful. It has a rose-shaped window dating from 1210 and has a purity of its Gothic style similar to that of Paris. The figures carving is exquisite, which shows various scenes from the Bible and prophets.


The interior stands out for its lightness, thanks to the material it is made with.


Once we left there it was needed a coffee in the coffee shops of the front, where we could easily see the imposing facade.


Surprise to find that yellow car with the word "MEXICO" in front of the cathedral. There, alone, without an owner, appeared to me like waiting me to take a picture (which I did, of course).


A ride through the old city, some souvenirs shopping, the classic photo and ready to return to Paris.
