The artist

Hoy es el tema de conversación obligado en todos los medios y en todos los círculos amantes del cine. Ayer fue la entrega número 84 de los Premios de la Academia de Estados Unidos, los famosos Oscares.

La película estelar de la noche fue la vanagloriada francesa "The artist", del francés Michel Hazanavicius. Un melodrama situada en los años 20's, protagonizada por Jean Dujardin y Bérénice Bejo. Lo particular de esta película es que es silente, como las viejas producciones.

Había escuchado y leído varios comentarios sobre la película, y más porque se hablaba ya de que sería de las fuertes competidoras en estos premios. Como es mi costumbre, intento ver todas las que estarán nominadas antes de que sea la ceremonia (el año pasado pude ver todas). Este año, tomando en cuenta que no todas se han estrenado ya en México, y menos aún, en todos los cines, me resultó complicado. Pero esta, "The artist", sí. Así que cuando salí de verla, quedé encantada.

Una película con un mensaje de amor, bellos gestos, vestuario, fotografía y música que hacen recordar que el buen cine no tiene necesidad de erotismo, frases huecas, mensajes superfluos y temas retorcidos.

Como datos curiosos:

• Bérénice Bejo es la esposa del director, Michel Hazanavicius.
• Es un melodrama, como las mejores películas silentes.
• Fue filmada en 35 días en Los Ángeles.
• Durante las filmaciones, el director puso de fondo música clásica de Hollywood.
• La música fue grabada por la Filarmónica de Bruselas.
• Sólo una canción tiene letra y es cantada, "Pennies from Heaven", escrita en 1936, aunque la película se sitúa entre 1927 y 1932.

Para mi gusto, es de esas películas que se convierten inmediatamente en un clásico (incluyendo el soundtrack, ¡que ya lo quiero!). Para volverla a ver y tenerla en la videoteca personal.

¡Bravo a los franceses!

Y un gran bravo, de pie, a Demián Bichir (mexicano nominado al Oscar como Mejor Actor por la película "A better life"), por demostrar que sí se puede, que el talento pesa y resplandece tarde que temprano.

Today is the required topic of conversation in all media and all  movie lovers circles. Yesterday was the issue number 84 of the Academy Awards in the U.S., the famous Oscars.

The star film of the evening was the vaunted French "The artist", directed by the Frenchman Michel Hazanavicius. A melodrama located in the 20's, starring Jean Dujardinand and Bérénice Bejo. The particularity of this film is that it is silent, as the old production ones.

I had heard and read several comments about the film, and overall, that it was sounding as a strong competitor in these awards. As is my habit, I try to watch all that will be nominated before the ceremony (last year I saw them all). This year, taking into account that not all have already in Mexico been released, and certainly not in all cinemas, I found it complicated. But this, "The artist", yes. So when I went to see it, I was delighted.

A film with a message of love, beautiful gestures, costumes, photography and music that remind you that good cinema does not need eroticism, empty phrases, superfluous messages and themes twisted.

• It is a melodrama, as the best silent films.
• It was filmed in 35 days in Los Angeles.
• During the filming, the director played classical music background in Hollywood.
• The music was recorded by the Brussels Philharmonic.
• Only one song has lyrics and is sung, "Pennies from Heaven", written in 1936, although the film is set between 1927 and 1932.

For my taste, is one of those movies that become an instant classic (including the soundtrack, which I already want!). To watch it again and have it into the personal video library.

Bravo to the French! 

And a big standing bravo to Demian Bichir (Mexican Academy Award nominee for Best Actor for the movie "A better life"), to prove that it is possible, that talent shines and it  stands out sooner or later.
